More ways to get back to nature in the Willamette
Valley:
See Nature in Bloom – Oregon’s
Mt. Hood Territory (Canby Area)
- Fields ablaze in colorful blooms welcome visitors to Canby. Stroll
through the gardens of Swan Island Dahlias, the
nation’s largest grower of this unique flower, featuring over 350
varieties on 40 acres. Don’t miss the incredible hybrids created
on-site. The annual Swan Island Dahlia Festival is
a chance to see the species in all its glory. With a visit to the Wooden
Shoe Tulip Festival each March and April, you can enjoy
the sea of color created by over 40 acres of tulips and daffodils while
you wander the display gardens and take home fresh flowers or bulbs.
Feed the Fishes - Linn County (Albany Area)
- The water comes alive as visitors toss food into the Roaring
River Fish Hatchery. Located just outside Scio,
the hatchery is home to thousands of rainbow trout and steelhead, raised
to stock local streams and lakes.
Follow the Trail - Lane County (Eugene Area)
- Hike or cycle through the undergrowth of the Aufderheide
National Scenic Byway in the McKenzie River Valley. Follow
the bends of the Willamette and McKenzie rivers as you explore the forest,
stopping at the interpretative signs to learn about forest management. Be
sure to take a break next to the rushing white waters and let the sound
soothe you.
Paddle the Lazy River - Yamhill County (Newberg Area)
- Give your arms a gentle workout as you glide down the Willamette River
in a canoe or kayak. Starting at Rogers Landing in
Newberg, a gentle current eases boats down the river, allowing for spectacular
wildlife viewing opportunities. The water draws animals ranging from Great
Blue Heron to deer. Call ahead and order a boxed lunch from the French
Bear Restaurant to enjoy during a break along the banks
of the river.
Watch this Garden Grow - Marion & Polk Counties (Salem Area)
- Stand in the shadow of a 400-year-old oak tree at The Oregon
Garden in Silverton. The grounds are made up of 80 acres
of specialty gardens, water features, and wetlands. Kids will enjoy
a visit to Rediscovery Forest, a garden with a diverse bird population
created with kids in mind.
