Yamhill County is wine country, where artisan vintners craft complex Pinots,
and creative chefs use the region’s bounty as their palette for innovative
menus. Start at the northern end of the valley, in Newberg, and make a private
appointment to visit Chehalem Winery, one of Oregon’s best small premium
wineries. Across the street is Rex Hill Vineyards, a retired nut-drying
facility that now produces Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon
blanc and Riesling. From Newberg, the rolling hills lead South to some of
the region’s oldest and most innovative wine producers.
To sample vintages from across the state, visit one of the Willamette
Valley’s founding culinary outposts, Nick’s Italian
Café, which offers an
extensive wine list, lunch and a five-course dinner. For fare that
is uniquely Oregon, Dundee Bistro’s menu highlights
wine country ingredients with dishes like Roasted Mushroom Pasta and Calrton
Farms Pork Tenderloin.
Stay at A’Tuscan Estate in McMinnville and be surrounded by historic decor.
Cooking classes are available upon request, but before you start, visit
the McMinnville Farmers’ Market for fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables
and eggs, as well as gourmet cheeses, wine and fresh flowers from the region.
Plan a getaway to Yamhill County, and you’ll leave with an appreciation
for the dedication to artisan food and drink that region is famous for.
