As Oregon’s state capital and second largest city, Salem is a vibrant
metropolitan area with numerous historical, cultural and scenic attractions.
Located near the geographic center of Oregon’s Willamette Valley – only
an hour to the Oregon Coast or Cascade Mountains – Salem is also
a gateway to phenomenal outdoor recreation. And, one can’t
forget the scenic farmland surrounding the city that brings wonderful culinary
delights, fabulous wines and lively year-round farmers markets overflowing
with locally raised produce and hand-crafted products.
This is a place where you can walk behind a waterfall, hike an old growth
forest, discover an award-winning winery, or savor the fragrance of a
spectacular garden. A fascinating mix of old and new combine in Salem’s
historic downtown and State Capitol Park Mall. Visitors to Salem will
appreciate the historic district and numerous parks within walking distance
of the city’s downtown, and 1,869 acres of nearby park land beckon
people to take a stroll and stop to smell the roses. You’ll
find museums and galleries filled with work inspired by the rich landscape. Children
will be captivated by wondrous activities developed especially for them,
such as A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery
Village and Enchanted
Forest – a hands-on children’s museum and a storybook
theme park. You’ll meet people who take a little extra time to be
friendly.
Now is a great time to visit Salem, with its numerous gardens awakening
and fun events offering something for everyone. One of Oregon’s
premier food and wine events, the 4th
Annual Wine, Cheese and Pear Jubilee at the renowned Willamette Valley
Vineyards, takes place March 10-11 this year. This widely anticipated
event pairs award-winning wines with local artisan cheeses and Oregon
pears – a heavenly combination. Guests can enjoy exploring
the delicious flavors of this special combination while learning about
the fine art of cheese making from the experts at Oregon Gourmet Cheeses,
Willamette Valley Cheese Company and more. The Oregon Pear Bureau
will share several varieties of this favorite fruit and offer information
on incorporating it into dishes.
Oregon has a reputation as a great place to film movies, and it’s
known for having a movie-loving population. This can clearly be
seen in the numerous and widely attended film festivals throughout the
state. Salem builds on the success of its inaugural film festival
with the 2nd annual Salem
Film Festival on April 20-22. The number three has a starring
role in this event, with 30 movies being shown over three days at three
venues, all within three downtown Salem blocks. Films range across
genres -domestic and foreign features, documentaries, animation, Academy
Award nominated shorts, kids’ shorts and a youth and amateur competition. Salem
Film Festival also allows film-goers to interact with the filmmakers themselves
as attendees participate in Q&A sessions with select filmmakers following
the screenings of their work. Filmmakers’ galas at the Historic
Elsinore Theatre and Salem Cinema add an element of elegance to the festival.
