While wineries continue to flourish in the Salem area, the local craft brewing industry has also made huge strides in recent years. One of the pioneers to spearhead the creation of a craft brew culture in Salem is Gilgamesh Brewing – known not only for creating award-winning beer, but also for opening one of the best new spots to sit back, sip and relax with friends and family.

Gilgamesh BrewingGilgamesh Brewing was born in 2009 when Mike, Matt and Nick Radtke, along with their father Lee, started brewing beer commercially out of their home. They quickly outgrew their home-based operation, which prompted the family to open “The Campus,” a 130-seat restaurant, bar and outdoor event venue which officially opened its doors in November 2012.

“We wanted to create a place where people felt comfortable hanging out,” says Nick Radtke. With that premise in mind, the restaurant features two cozy fireplaces (one inside and one outside), an open beam ceiling and lots of natural light. Quirky details – like lamps made from recycled metal kegs and mason jars – add a rustic feel. An outdoor patio and lawn area backs up against Pringle Creek, providing the ideal spot for dining and sipping al fresco.

Craft beer enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that The Campus features at least 12 Gilgamesh beers on tap at any given time, plus local wines and hard cider. Menu items include hearty Northwest fare like scratch-made soups, fresh salads and gourmet burgers. Dishes feature seasonal, local ingredients including fruit and produce sourced from nearby farms.

On the brewery side, Gilgamesh operates a state-of-the-art brewhouse, featuring a custom built, 17-barrel system that is designed for maximum efficiency and uses 1/3 less water than the previous system. Tours of the brewing facility are offered regularly.

As you’re making travel plans this spring, be sure to visit Gilgamesh Brewing’s The Campus  - an ideal spot to enjoy local craft beer, Northwest cuisine and the beauty of the Mid-Willamette Valley.
